Are you big on gaining that muscle mass? You may not realise it, but most people clench their teeth when they're lifting heavy weights. Over time as you train more, just as your biceps get bigger through training, jaw muscles will get stronger too! Your teeth aren't designed to be touching so often nor with so much force. The average person only have their teeth touching less than 10 minutes a day!
Problems that can develop are:
- Loose teeth
- Cracking and chipping of teeth
- Stressed jaw joint
As you clench more and more, it starts to become a habit and you may end up clenching even when you're not at the gym!
The best solution is awareness of this habit and prevention. If you end up losing teeth, the situation is worsened. You will be distributing the force among less teeth, which accelerates the damage on what remains. A downhill spiral!
